Driftwood
on the beach at Rebecca Spit
|
Rebecca Spit Marine Provincial Park is a beautiful marine park enclosing Drew Harbour on
the east coast of Quadra Island in the Discover Island of British Columbia. Sandy beaches line both sides of the narrow 2-kilometre spit at
sheltered Drew Harbour, backed by open uplands interspersed with
stands of mostly second-growth trees, shrubs and grasses. An unusually
high concentration of driftwood accumulates on the sandy spit at
this park.

Rebecca Spit is
a popular destination in summer for yachts heading up or down the
coast, and the sheltered deep anchorage in Drew Harbour on the west
side of the spit is a long-time favourite anchorage for boaters. An
easy walking loop trail leads along both sides of Rebecca Spit and
offers ample opportunities for exploring the driftwood-strewn beach.
Swimming, fishing, windsurfing, and kayaking are all popular activities
at Rebecca Spit’s large picnic area. Paddlers can set in at the boat
launch and enjoy a scenic paddle around the bay.

The waters around Quadra Island are considered to be excellent for
cold water scuba diving. Dive tours can be arranged through commercial
companies on Quadra Island and Campbell River.
There is no provincial
campground on Quadra Island, and camping is not permitted on Rebecca
Spit, but the Cape Mudge Indian Band operates a great private campground
at the southern end of Rebecca Spit Park.
The 177-hectare park offers extensive day-use facilities, with
picnic tables overlooking the sandy beach, wheelchair accessible
pit toilets, a grass playing field, and a boat launch ramp on the
west side of the spit near the park entrance. There is one fresh
water hand pump, located near the entrance to the park. All other
amenities are available at nearby Heriot Bay.
