Every
now and then you will come across a golf course that simply has
to be played to be believed. Olympic View Golf Club in Victoria
on Vancouver Island is one of those courses.
With two waterfalls,
breathtaking views of the Olympic Mountains, a natural park-like
setting, and twelve lakes to its credit, Olympic View is easily
one of the prettiest courses you will ever play. Don’t be fooled
though; the course’s beauty belies a test of the game for golfers
of all levels.
Its 6,530 yards
take you around rock bluffs, past lakes and through lush coastal
forests. No two holes are quite the same but each one is as memorable
as the last.
Perhaps its
most distinctive hole is its phenomenal finishing hole. With three
dramatic changes in elevations this seemingly straight away shot
becomes anything but a routine hole. Moderate hitters should play
conservatively here but big hitters can gamble with the following
strategy: Pull out the big stick on this par five and carry your
ball over the rock outcropping at the top of the hill 240 yards
out. If successful your ball will land on the down slope and roll
to the perfect landing area almost 300 yards off the tee and 215
yards short of the green.
From
there it’s a controlled iron or fairway wood to the three tiered,
elevated green in front of the clubhouse. Birdie is a great score
here particularly if the pin is placed back but eagle is a legendary
score. See if you can match what Tiger did when he played Olympic
View in 94: Driver, 5 iron, chip-in for eagle.
