Opened in 1913, the venerable Royal Colwood Golf Club in Victoria is consistently ranked as one of the top courses in all of Canada, and is a superb addition to any golf vacation on Vancouver Island. Play it just once and you will understand what all the fuss is about.

Carved out of old mixed forest in a setting not unlike the famous Sahalee Golf Club, Royal Colwood uses towering trees and deceptive greens as it main defences. Players will often have to wrestle with their desire to bend the course to their will and the premium they place on staying out of trouble.

Perhaps the purest example of Royal Colwood golf is the par four 3rd hole. At 422 yards from the back tees, this dogleg right has plenty of challenge for even the longest hitters. It’s biggest challenge though lies not in its distance but in it requirements for precision. It’s no fluke that this hole is rated #1 on the course. Lined by tall trees on both sides, with out of bounds on the right and a fairway bunker on the left, players must hit a straight tee shot up the left centre of the fairway to get in ideal position for their shot at the green. Once there then it is a long iron or fairway wood that must carry to a gently sloping green that is guarded by a creek in front and trees on three sides. If the drive did not go well you must lay-up short of the creek for your second shot and let your short game get you up and down for par.

With such and incredible setting and beautiful conditioning it is no wonder that Royal Colwood has hosted numerous Provincial Championships and is constantly regarded as one of the best in Canada.
